Where We Work
The Green Hub is supporting the development of local initiatives of
significant scale in the United States, South Africa, Brazil, Colombia
and Central America with plans for expanding work in Africa and Asia.
In each country the Green Hub focuses on an area of strategic importance
to the goals of both poverty reduction and climate change. The Green Hub
works with experienced local partners to develop their ideas and
resources into viable, large-scale enterprises and initiatives. Current
initiatives include:
United States
Community initiatives and coalitions organizing to create green jobs and
community enterprises linked to energy efficiency, renewable energy and
green business. This work emphasizes the recognition and development of
community assets such as culture, local knowledge and the significant
social capital in low-income communities.
Latin America
Working in partnership with social organizations, municipalities and
academic institutions to support initiatives in recycling and waste
management, renewable energy and low-carbon food systems. This work
emphasizes the development of new enterprise and finance models that
allow very low-income communities and producers to scale up their
innovations in green + equity.
Africa
Working in partnership with Just Energy, a not-for-profit social
enterprise that works with low-income communities to maximise community
revenues from medium-sized renewable energy businesses, and to increase
the supply of clean energy for local and national consumption. Just
Energy aims to develop 20 community-based renewable energy enterprises
by 2020, primarily in South Africa, and extending to other countries.
